Sexuality and Pregnancy Date:04 May 2024

Sexuality is born with us and dies with us. At each stage of life it is different and evolves and changes as time goes by. With these few words we can guess that during pregnancy we continue to be sexual beings. Did you know that sexuality has 4 functions? If you are reading this because you are pregnant, it means that you have already experienced one, and it is reproduction, but it is not the only one. I'll tell you now about the other three: pleasure, intimacy with your partner and self-esteem. You shouldn't miss any of these shows just because you're pregnant. We are going to divide what is happening to you in each trimester of your pregnancy, just to make it more educational: First trimester: This is the time when some discomforts appear, such as nausea in the morning, vomiting, you become more tired and sleepy. Added to this are some fears (the biggest being the loss of pregnancy). It doesn't seem like a good time to think about having sexual activity... But don't think that's the case! This is the other side of this moment in your life: you are more vulnerable, you need containment, hugs, pampering, kisses and caresses... In other words, you need sex. Second trimester: During this stage, the physical discomfort generally disappears, you no longer have the fantasy of loss and the hormones begin to play in your favor, so it is likely that you will reconnect with your sexual desire. Some women connect even more intensely than before they became pregnant. Third trimester: It is in these months where the belly grows and romantic encounters can be uncomfortable, you can no longer be as erotic as before and combining being a mother and sex costs you a little more. Sometimes there is the question of what your child will feel during intercourse. I tell you that you don't have to worry about that because the baby is well protected by the ovular membranes. In any case, oral sex is a good option at this stage. I can tell you something in favor of this choice: the congestion that occurs in the vulva and vagina makes the area better lubricated and increases sensitivity and orgasms can be more intense. Let's look at some conclusions to keep in mind: pregnancy is a circumstance that produces a lot of anxiety and what better than a pleasurable sexual encounter (and note that I don't say “intercourse”) to help relieve all this tension? The chemical substances that are generated during sexual intercourse and that make you feel happy will transmit that same happiness to your baby. Sexual intercourse improves the flexibility of the pelvic muscles and helps prepare the body for childbirth. Finally, I make a suggestion: if you have any uncertainties, do not hesitate to talk about it with your obstetrician doctor because sometimes his own modesty prevents them from bringing up the subject, but he will surely be ready to help you with that as well.
