While it may depend on each country, region, or maternity center, and whether it is public or private, here is a list that will help you a lot when packing your hospital bag.

For the mother:

  • A short and comfortable nightgown for labor.
  • Two practical nightgowns, preferably with a front opening to facilitate breastfeeding your baby.
  • Underwear, at least six to eight pairs, comfortable, spacious, and made of cotton.
  • Comfortable cotton bras, ideally special ones for breastfeeding.
  • Breast pads.
  • A pair of comfortable slippers.
  • Two packs of special cotton postpartum pads.
  • A hand towel.
  • A toothbrush.
  • Soap, preferably neutral, glycerin-based, unscented.
  • A comb or hairbrush.
  • Shampoo and conditioner.
  • A hairdryer.
  • Deodorant.
  • Some calendula cream for your nipples or any other personal cream.
  • Comfortable clothing for when you leave the clinic.
  • Your and your partner’s documentation: IDs, health insurance.
  • Phone numbers of the people you want to notify once the baby is born
  • For the baby:

    • Two or three thin linen gowns.
    • Two or three cotton gowns.
    • Twelve disposable diapers.
    • A cotton hat.
    • A set with a button-up gown and pants.
    • One or two pairs of socks.
    • A blanket (for when you leave the hospital).
    • A pacifier for newborns.
  • For the companion:

    • Comfortable clothes.
    • Snacks or drinks.
    • Phone and charger.
    • Camera or phone to take pictures.

    Note: Some maternity centers and clinics provide all the baby’s clothing during the hospital stay, so you only need to bring the outfit for when they go to their new home.
